MAJ Nathaniel D. Bastian, PhD

MAJ Nathaniel D. Bastian, PhD serves as Chief Data Scientist and Senior Research Scientist at the Army Cyber Institute (ACI) at West Point, also serving as Assistant Professor of Operations Research and Data Science at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA). At the ACI, MAJ Bastian serves as the Research Team Lead of the ACI’s Data and Decision Sciences research team. He also serves as the Director of the ACI’s Intelligent Cyber-Systems and Analytics Research Laboratory (ICSARL) directing and overseeing the ACI’s data science computing capabilities, resources and services while leading externally-funded projects in support of Army, DoD and IC stakeholders focused on researching, designing, developing, experimenting, testing, evaluating and operationalizing computationally intelligent, assured and distributed decision-support models, tools and systems for autonomous cyber operations in highly-contested, complex battlefield environments. He teaches and advises cadets at USMA within the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Systems Engineering, and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. MAJ Bastian has co-authored over 70 refereed journal and conference papers, multiple book chapters, and one textbook. He is the recipient of numerous academic awards, honors and grants, to include a Fulbright Scholarship and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. He currently serves on the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) Board of Directors, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Military and Security Society Council, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Information Sciences and Technology Study Group. He previously served as Visiting Research Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, as well as Distinguished Visiting Professor at the National Security Agency. His prior military assignments include serving as Chief Artificial Intelligence Architect at the DoD Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, Operations Research Scientist and Assistant Professor at the ACI/USMA, Analytics Officer at the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, and Aeromedical Evacuation Officer and UH-60 Black Hawk Aviator at the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade.
